The conference ‘A Future with Zero CO2 Emissions’ (May 2006) focused on ways to effectively reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions at a local level, and on adapting to a changing climate. It was held in Stockholm, a city that is very advanced in climate protection, and an example to all other local authorities.
Energy efficiency (EE) and renewable energy (RE) were two central issues that were addressed, in particular in the transport sector and the built environment. The excellent examples presented have been selected as they can be adapted and replicated in many different cities and towns.

Opportunities for local authorities to get involved
(i) The Stockholm Impulse Declaration calls on all local governments to intensify their political commitment and implement effective strategies and actions to respond to climate change within their area of jurisdiction. The City of Stockholm and ICLEI invite all committed communities to join forces and sign the declaration.

(ii) The European Cities for Climate Protection (CCP) Campaign – The Reinforced Strategy for the CCP Campaign in Europe was launched during the Stockholm conference. This framework is open to all European local authorities (EU27 and beyond), to support exchange and action in the area of climate protection. (Free participation. To join political commitment to act in the areas of mitigation and adaptation is a pre-condition).
