Växjö


General information
Växjö with a population of 76,000 is located right in the middle of Southern Sweden. The municipality, with an area of 1 674 km², is in the heart of the traditional Swedish province of Småland. The geographical area is characterised by vast forests and a multitude of lakes which creates an attractive environment for its inhabitants as well as for visitors.
Its industry ranks among the most dynamic ones in Sweden. Small businesses, major industries and high technology are all represented here. Växjö is also one of the media centres in Sweden where many TV and radio programmes are produced. The Municipality of Växjö is the capital city and administrative centre of Kronoberg County, which includes a total of eight municipalities. Växjö is governed by the city council, in effect the city's parliament.

Environmental activities
The municipality has a large experience in the Local Agenda 21 process and is engaged in climate protection and renewable energies. It decided to go beyond the norms of mere compliance with environmental directives and to take the lead in sustainable development. Växjö was also selected as the winner of the Local Initiatives Award for Excellence in Atmospheric Protection for setting aggressive targets for greenhouse gas reductions, including the elimination of the use of fossil fuels in municipal operations, and for its outstanding efforts to achieve these targets.

Main results
Växjö's city council ratified the first master budget on 27 March 2003. One year later the budget balance and the master budget 2004 were ratified as well. Moreover the city council decided to adpot ecoBUDGET as standard instrument.
