Under the patronage of the German Federal Ministry for Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety, Mr. Sigmar Gabriel, ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, the District Berlin-Lichtenberg and the Union of the Baltic Cities on behalf of Managing Urban Europe-25 (MUE-25) organised the BerlinForum for “Managing a Sustainable Future Cities and Regions”, which took place on 12-13 February 2008 in Berlin, Germany.
The event gathered 150 participants and key persons responsible for the urban issue from 25 European Countries. It included representatives from the Local Governments, Regional Authorities, National Governments, the European Commission and the EU Parliament. The ambition was to get a wide participation to enable the spreading of the experiences made by the cities and regions participating in the MUE-25 project to a wider range of cities and regions. We happily can conclude that the BerlinForum has served as discussion platform for a variety of issues around integrated management for a sustainable future of cities & regions - from climate change to equity, from the EU Lisbon Strategy for Growth to the Aalborg Commitments.
All key note speakers have welcomed the important results presented as the MUE-25 Integrated Management System to implement policies and strategies for sustainable development.
In a ceremonial conclusion, the MUE-25 partners cities and regions have committed to continue their work on integrated management and network for making it a European initiative. They also have accepted the kind invitation of Leeds City Council for a follow-up forum in 2012.
