1. ICLEI hits the 1000 member markICLEI’s membership has reached the 1000 mark, thus doubling since 2007 - a remarkable rate of growth. ICLEI now represents over 420 million people worldwide, with 100 of its members boasting populations of one million or more. In Europe, more than 180 local governments and their associations are members of ICLEI, amongst them 15 European capital cities. The 1000 figure was reached with the addition of the city of Mumbai (India). The announcement was made official at the World Urban Forum, which took place at the beginning of November in Nanjing (China). Learn more about ICLEI membership here. |
2. ICLEI member newsWatercycle Project in Croatian cities The closing ceremony of the "Watercycle" project took place in ICLEI Member City Koprivnica (Croatia). Representatives from Croatian project partners gathered, in order to present the results achieved. "Watercycle" is the project of the Adriatic New Neighbourhood Programme INTERREG/CARDS-PHARE, whose general goal is the promotion of social and economic development and cooperation between the Countries of the Adriatic Area. Participating in this project were the Sisak-Moslavina County and the Town of Koprivnica, Velika Gorica and Pleternica. All reported improvements in the operative status of drainage system, in the adaptation for future network expansion and in the establishment of ecological and energetic sustainable measures.For more information, visit www.watercycleproject.org/eng. |

4. Sustainability, Competitiveness and Identity in Tourism DestinationsThe Second International Conference on Sustainable Tourism took place on 27-29 November in Rimini (Italy). Organised by the Province of Rimini in collaboration with ICLEI, the Conference focused on Sustainability, Competitiveness and Identity in Tourism Destinations.
Following the first International Conference of 2001, which produced the "Rimini Charter for Sustainable Tourism", this year event aimed at assessing the results achieved and at identifying new challenges for sustainability in mass tourism destinations. 5. European Fair Trade Procurement on the move The number of European cities engaged in purchasing Fair Trade products is growing. When it comes to including Fair Trade in public tenders, the Mediterranean countries in the EU are clearly leading. One of the most impressive initiatives is currently the "Fair Canteen Services" Campaign launched by the Italian organisation Ctm Altromercato which succeeded in convincing more than 150 Italian cities to ask for Fair Trade products in their public procurement actions for canteen services in schools.The Italian campaign was one of the initiatives presented at the "Public Affairs" project partner meeting held at Peschiera del Garda (Italy) on 5 November. ICLEI’s European Secretariat is one of several partners in the project consortium led by the European Fair Trade Association (EFTA). The "Public Affairs" project aims to assess and promote Fair Trade in public procurement (FTPP) in Europe. An online information platform – the European Fair Trade Observatory - has been set up to bring together and disseminate information across Europe on FTPP. 6. Bringing real, sustainable change onto the market with Procura+An energy-efficient future was on the international agenda when Birmingham played host to the Procura+ Seminar on "smarter engagement with the market" on 6-7 November 2008. Procura+ is the European Campaign designed to help support public authorities across Europe in implementing sustainable procurement and help promote their achievements."Procura+ gives most value for money and offers great networking possibilities, combined with new and interesting information on latest approaches such as pre-procurement of sustainable innovations." said Collan Murray, Senior Procurement Manager from the Greater London Authority - participating in the Campaign since early 2008. 7. Outcomes of the EU - Asia Solid Waste Management ConferenceThe recent conference "EU - Asia Solid Waste Management" saw a high participation of experts from the EU and Asia, gathering together to exchange information and experiences on environmental policies, technologies, and practices in the field of solid waste management. The conference papers, as well as the Programme Book and the Partnership Match-making Catalogue, are now available for download from the conference website. The event was part of the EU-Asia Sustainable Waste Management Cycle, a project supported by the Asia Pro-Eco Programme of the European Commission and promoted, among others, by ICLEI. European Waste Reduction Week: reduce, re-use and recycle!In preparation of the first official European Waste Reduction Week, scheduled for 2009, a pilot edition took place from 22 November to 30 November. 9. Working towards a common agenda for mobility in cities and regions at the Polis Conference Decision makers at local, national and EU level, transport professionals from public authorities, transport industry players, researchers and other stakeholders interested in tackling congestion and climate change gathered together at the 2008 annual Polis Conference on 25- 26 November in ICLEI member city Barcelona.The conference "Public meets private: Towards a common agenda for mobility in cities and regions" provided an opportunity to take stock of the achievements and learn about future partnerships and cooperation on sustainable mobility. Current practice and future plans on how to reduce the environmental impact of road transport, tackle congestion and manage mobility were presented. New events"In the eye of the storm: Councils at the heart of tackling climate change" Conference, 21-22 January 2009, Manchester (United Kingdom) "In the eye of the storm: Councils at the heart of tackling climate change" is the title of a conference and exhibition taking place in Manchester (United Kingdom) on 21 – 22 January 2009.The focus of the conference will be on opportunities and challenges in reducing emissions under the new performance framework for monitoring and regulating local governments. The programme will include interactive debates as well as practical workshops which will equip participants with ideas, tools and contacts. The conference is organised by ICLEI member Local Government Association (LGA), and Energy Saving Trust (EST), ICLEI partners in the Nottingham Declaration Partnership.
