Introducing eco buses in Newcastle city fleet ICLEI member city Newcastle (United Kingdom) is on the road to more sustainable public transport, with a local bus operator launching a £7.2million fleet of 26 hybrid electric buses. The investment follows the receipt of £2.2 million from the English Government’s Green Bus Fund, to which a further £5 million was added by the bus operator. The award from the Green Bus Fund was the second most successful bid outside London. Councillor Nick Forbes said, “As the UK’s most sustainable city, we are at the forefront of promoting and delivering the low carbon agenda and we recognise that the benefits of hybrid engine technology extend beyond those than can be measured purely in terms of fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.” The city council plans to support these services by introducing an environmental zone and air quality management area in a central location and stepping up enforcement measures to improve reliability. The bus operator, Stagecoach says the buses will reduce the carbon emissions on these two routes alone by 30 percent. The fleet of new buses went into service on 1 July 2011. The lights alert car drivers from a distance so they can reduce their speed as they approach. There is now also a crosswalk for pedestrians and they have precedence over the traffic on the cycle path, a unique situation in the ICLEI member city. Frank Uekermann from the Freiburg Civil Engineering Department says the city is pleased with the result and that, "safety is a priority for all." The project cost €45,000 and the lights took three weeks to install. Freiburg has a long-standing reputation as a leader in environmental practices and innovative thinking. For example, its football stadium, which is located close to the LED lit cycle path, was the first stadium in the country to install photovoltaic solar panels on the roof.
